Stray magnetism causing hum  Reply with quote

Hi.
My home recording setup is painfully basic and I use a Tascam 414 as my MTR. I've just noticed a rather loud hum when playing back tapes that seems to have arrived suddenly. It seems to be present regardless of which tape I use or whether I'm listening in headphones or monitors. I've read in the manual that I need to clean the tascam regularly and use a de- gausser to remove "Stary magnetism". Can anyone help? is it "Stray magnetism" that is causing this hum or what? and if so where can I buy a de gausser?

Any suggestions much appreciated. Smile

hum  Reply with quote

hi!
fisrt disconect the cassette from your amp.
try using headphones only still hum try moving cassette to another location by itself and still use headphones only. You should not have a hum now because you are isolated from the rest of your package.
If the hum is gone then I would look at your cables you are using to hook up to your system
also where you position the cassette ,if directly on top of a transformer not a good thing.

try this first then well talk about degausing which is something else and a little trickier.

Bye
Mike

Ground Loops Perhaps?  Reply with quote

Timbo hi and welcome to AudioCourses.

As mike indicates you need to isolate the problem; so taking the tape machine out of the circuit and listening to that on its own will tell you if it is noisy and has a buzz, or if the buzz is stemming from elsewhere.

Try this with all your equipment, isolate the problem.

Hope that helps
