» Ignore This Hater! Ok, I really want to know what the hell to do when i sample something from a song. I want to know if there is anyone on this board, if I gave them a sample of a song i sampled, could they flip, i just want to see how this **** is done... And no im not try to jack any beats or ****, im just trying to learn.

1. I always read that people sample parts from songs, then are you looping that part over and over??

2. Then at the same time creating a seperate beat to lay over the top of the sample?
3. And if you do sample a part of the song, how then do you make a chorus??

4. How do you sample a part of a song if it has voices over it?? Or do i just take parts of the song like the intro or outro where the music is just playing, but then still how can i get the chorus if voices are going..??

Please someone help me out with this, i post this stuff on the other board, but no one really ever replies, ive noticed sometimes you all answer these type questions, so producers help me out!

One!

AKAI samplers  Reply with quote

Mystic G.

I'm no expert on sampling but I do have some experience having learnt on AKAI samplers (although I've never gone as far as putting together a full song with them).

However, I can tell from your post that you are quite new to sampling and perhaps it still holds a good deal of mystery for you. Quite simply, when you are making music there are no rules, just whatever sounds good, but there are techniques which can help you achieve this end.

I'm assuming you want to make music entirely out of samples, but remember you can drop sample in over live stuff and vice versa when you're mixing.

First off, you need a sampler. This catches the bits of sound you want to use. If you are just sampling odd bits to use with live recorded elements you can get away with triggering it yourself. Otherwise, you need a sequencer. This will enable you to tell your sampler what samples to play and when. Very useful. If you don't already have a sequencer, get one (there are hundreds available as freeware on the net). Just the act of getting one and learning how they work will probably answer all your questions. Some kind of Multi track recorder and mixing desk would help you as well, and lots of sequencers have this stuff built in.

In answer to your questions though:

1. Only if you want/ need to. Some samples may only appear in a track once, some may be looped over and over, some may not have been "Sampled" by a sampling machine but may actually be recorded from a turntable and scratched with by a DJ. This type are still referred to by most musicians etc. as "Samples."

2. Er, yes I would think so. If you want. You can sample beats, vocals, instruments, whatever you want.

3. Ok It's hard to know what you mean here. Some clarification would be good... but if I understand you correctly then basically you just programme the sequencer to play the parts/ samples that you want in the chorus at the right point in the song.

4. Assuming you are trying to sample backing so that you can loop it, the easiest way is, indeed, to sample bits of the song which don't have singing on them. If you have access to an original recording still in its multi - track (pre-mastering) state (say, if you were remixing a song for someone) then you could isolate the elements you want to sample from the rest of the mix. If you are bootlegging from a cd or somesuch then short of inventive fx/ insert use you are pretty much stuck with what's on there.

hope this helps. Just to state again, I'm no expert, and I've probably gone on a bit here.... sorry!

Sampling Help  Reply with quote

I could hook you up bro.

1. Once the part is samples you can basically do as you please. You loop it over and over but to give a nice feel to the song you drop parts out here and there to give it some flavor.
2. When you sample you try to take individual pieces so you can add your own things to it. For instance sample a hot string and lay your own drums over it.
3. You make a chorus anyhow you want. If you Looped a sample over and over then you can use dropouts at the chorus, add a different drum variation, the ideas are limitless.
4. You usually try to get parts of a song that are just instrumental and hopefully some individual parts. It would be easier to mix and add you own stuff to as well that way.
