Week 1 Orientation - Tune In  Reply with quote

This week is an orientation to the course and a way for us to “tune in” our ears.

I have two concepts for you this week.

1. download the following file:

http://www.audiocourses.com/download-file-41.html

This is a simple feedback trainer, which will produce a range of frequencies. The idea is that you train yourself to be able to guess the played frequency.

I would suggest you do this regularly now and aim to improve your scores throughout the duration of the course.

2. Analysis of songs is a vital part of becoming an all rounded professional. Please download the following file , which is zipped. If you do not have an un-zip program you can get a free trial here www.winzip.com

The file is an mp3 of the classic Stevie Wonder track Superstition.

I have created a public forum thread, which is to be the place where you post your thoughts, feelings and responses to the tune.

Please read the introduction there and start your responses, we are aiming to have a number of responses before the first Live Workshop so you’ll need to get cracking on this one as soon as possible.

Best of Luck

Also loving the frequency guesser - I will be doing in my sleep.

First thoughts on the Stevie track after a couple of listens:-

Love the guitar hook that runs through most of the track - it gets you right from the start. The song is quite repetitive when you listen to it closely but it works well it is such a good groove. Very nice brass mix. Personally I think it lacks a bit of 'kick' in the bass and drum mix. I like the simple bass section in the verse that follows the kick drum, it gets the groove going well - reminds of the sort of stuff Stereo MC's did in the 90's - one of the best bands for a bass and drum groove in my opinion. There is quite a lot happening in the song - complex riffs etc but they all work well and sit together well in the mix. Obviously a classic!

It is now on my iPod for some closer listening

Yes the feedback trainer is good fun and very useful too.

Looking forward to reading your thoughts about Superstition in the public area. We should get this moving as soon as possible as the idea is to post and reflect, post and reflect.

Hoggs you might want to re-post your first responses in that forum, this may initiate others to respond.

Great , I like that feedback trainer....10 kHz on headphones sound like someone is drilling a hole in your head Smile
I wonder if I'll get better in guessing the frequency by practising..
