| Week 6 - Remix Practical Pt.2 |

As mentioned in the workshop we're gonna look at furthering your mixes of "Stuff like that" by incorporating some additional sounds derived from Roland 808, 909 and 303 modules.
The sounds can come from any source you want (Rebirth for example)
If you don't have access to such software or hardware then there are free VST plugins that can do the job.
A free 303 VSTi is here;

As for the drums, I have uploaded 808 and 909 drums samples for you to use at the Upload Station.
I would recommend using the triggering software Chris mentions to create MIDI tracks, and then using a VSTi such as Battery to trigger the drum samples.
Again, if you don't have Battery or similiar there are free options.
Here is a freeware Drum Sampler;
http://www.kvr-vst.com/get/39.html
and a slightly simpler option is here;

With the 303 synth, remember to experiment with the settings using some of the knowledge that you have gleaned from the synthesis questions. The controls are pretty simple on the Tau and you should be able to create both basslines and 'acid style' lead lines using the Tau.
Have Fun. _________________ ben@audiocourses.com |

I'm having trouble doing this. I'm finding it hard to use the audio files to trigger the samples in a drum sampler - any tips?
Also are we supposed to make up a bass part or use the bass part to trigger Tau in some way?
Any hints / tips / advice will be gladly recieved!!!

Firstly, the bass line can't really be triggered as such but it would be good for you to have an attempt at creating a bassline.
For the bulk of the song the 2 chords are E7 and A so you could just use the notes E and A.
Alternatively if you feel brave you could construct a line using the notes in the E pentatonic scale, the E blues scale and the E mixolydian mode.
Regards the drums, what you would do is load the samples into your drums sampler, and assign the kick for example to MIDI note C1.
Then use the MIDI trigger plugin on the kick drum audio track to create a MIDI file with the output note as C1.
On the MIDI channel assign your drum sampler as the MIDI output and you should be able to hear the 808/909 drum being played. _________________ ben@audiocourses.com |

Hi Everyone – I’ve uploaded my remix of Stuff Like That (please don’t make me listen to it again – my kids are running around the house now singing it!!!!!).
I’ve gone for a 90’s euro dance hit!!!! Here’s what I did:-
After fiddling for many hours I finally got the KT drum trigger thing to work – bloody ingenious when it works! – particularly using the 3 filters to trigger different sounds from the same track – brilliant! I was struggling to get the samples Ben put up to work so I used an 808 kit I have got on a DXi synth. I used the drum trigger to trigger the kick and snare 808 sounds still using the original recording. I couldn’t get the hats to work with the trigger is I played new hats in myself – the timing in general is a bit dodgy on some parts as I had not got the tempo set up correctly so couldn’t quantise etc and haven’t had time to go back and redo it all.
I then played and recorded a new 303 track and recorded some automation of the envelopes to change the sound as it goes through the track Josh Wink styleee!!!
I put in some ‘euro’ orchestral hits and new ride and crash parts and a bit of phase on the keyboard part. Also added some delay to the vocals at the end.
I am not that happy with the overall mix but you should get the general idea. I think my problem is that I have not got ‘proper’ monitors yet so not getting a good mix sound – can anyone suggest any good monitors around £250 -£300 – I need to invest a.s.a.p!! I always seem to struggle to get a really good mix that jumps out at you – always seems to be lacking something.
Any comments would be welcome.

A quickie regarding monitors.
There are quite a few available in your price range but I would recommend the Tannoy Reveals, They are available in passive and active flavours depending on whether you have an amp. Also, they're pretty colours!
I have a passive pair in my home studio driven by a Samson Servo 170 (a studio amp that is very clean but is very prone to faults) and I swear by them - much less fatiguing and more bottom end than NS10Ms.
If you are going to specialise in dance where you really need freqs. below 60Hz to be clearly audible then you may want to look elsewhere although you will probably have to sacrifice mid-range clarity.
I will say that spending money on your monitors is vital as your system is only as good as the weakest link, and if you're not hearing a true representation then it can make all your other nice equipment worthless.
If you have some spare £s left over you may want to consider one of the basic acoustic treatment kits for your listening room - companies such as Auralex make affordable kits for home studios. _________________ ben@audiocourses.com |
