Start at the source. Make sure you have good mics, cables and no extra signal path points before recording. ie: my mic path is mic -> preamp -> sound card. I purposely bypass my mixer cause it introduces some extra noise. No good.
So make sure your source material is at it's best to begin with. |

what i did in my band practice room is put soft cheap particle foam, it absorbs alot of the sound so you dont have as much echo. and what i do to record guitar when im over a friends house recording is, i put the mic in front of the speaker and put a blanket around it. this gives it a liltte more fuller sound due to the sound waves not bouncing off of the wall and back into the microphone. those are just cheap easy methods. every one likes those! but dont expect professional studio recording with my tips, there just to save money |

Dn't be fooled by this old afage of a professional studio is needed for a professional sound. Even with all the little tips and tricks to save money a pro recording can still be had. Look at EPMD first song It's My Thing. They recorded it in three hours in their basement.
Trust your ears and test your mix on different system from the car to the boombox and you'll never go wrong. And practice, practice, practice. Even the seasoned mix vets need to practice. There is alwasy something to learn. I've been there now and done that and now I have my recordings sounding vry professional.
I just did a lot of trial and error, practiced and trusted my ears and test in different environments till I got my mixright and sounding tight.
You'll be amazed at what little adjustments in things here and there will do for your songs.
In a minute.

also. i dont know if this is the smartest move sound quality wise but, i try to use as many mics as possible, not just the bare minimum because i want to get every song on the drum set. i may not have the best mics , but i have a lot of them. again... i dont know if its beter or worse |
