<Audiocourses> Hi all
<iNSTiNCTDK> hey
<Duncan_4948> Hi
<Audiocourses> How ya doing instinct?
<griff505> hi
<Audiocourses> dunc
<Audiocourses> griff
<griff505> good good
<iNSTiNCTDK> im good thanks...u?
<griff505> tourself?
<Audiocourses> Doing good thanks.. have family staying with us for a while.
<Audiocourses> So fairly hectic but enjoyable.
<Audiocourses> How did the week go?
<Duncan_4948> I'm having difficulties finding a place for the xam - all the places I have tried so far have a policy of no external exam the gits!!!! - May consider going to Gloucester and make a holiday out of it.
<Duncan_4948> Anyone else having problems?
<iNSTiNCTDK> week went aight... man that was alot of questions
<griff505> i'm going to bristol uni tomorrow to ask about it
<iNSTiNCTDK> im going out tomorrow to ask some skools
<Audiocourses> Duncan, sounds a good idea..
<griff505> yeah i'm still ploughing threough the questions
<Audiocourses> Yeah lots of questions, only one more week or new stuff though
<Audiocourses> OF new stuff I should have said
* ben_m has joined #audiocourses
<Audiocourses> Regarding the exams.. I MUST have the places by mid week.
<Duncan_4948> Can't beleive how quick the course has gone by - time flies when answering lots of questions!
<Audiocourses> Yes Dunc it does..
<Duncan_4948> Hi Ben
<Audiocourses> Can I reply on everyone getting the exam location "nailed" by mid week?
<griff505> well i'm going to bristol uni tomorrow, i don't know what they will say
<Audiocourses> reply = rely
<ben_m> hi everyone!
<griff505> hi ben
<iNSTiNCTDK> im hoping...i'll have to see what the skools say
<Duncan_4948> Yeah - I am waiting to hear back from one more place - if tha's a no go I will go to Gloucester.
<griff505> whats in glouster?
<Audiocourses> Griff if you go to Gloucester you don;t have to pay invigilation fees..
<Duncan_4948> You can go direct to City and Guilds in Gloucester or London and do the exam for free (i.e no extra fee)
<griff505> maybe that would be the best option for me
<Duncan_4948> Chris, have you got the address in Gloucester?
<Audiocourses> It's not far for you griff
<griff505> yeah, i could easily get a train
<Audiocourses> You could meet up with Duncan too ;)
<Duncan_4948> We could do it together griff!
<Audiocourses> Griff just let me know if you are doing there.. I think it's easy to find
<griff505> i'm looking at train times now
<griff505> what time would i have to get there
<Audiocourses> I think they are scheduled around 10
<griff505> perfect
<griff505> well i will try bristol tomorrow, and if they say no i will do it there
<Audiocourses> Everyone please inform me by mid week.
<Audiocourses> With the details asked for in the forum.
<griff505> no problem
<Duncan_4948> OK, no probs
<iNSTiNCTDK> yeah no problem
<iNSTiNCTDK> if all goes well
<Audiocourses> Thanks.
<griff505> are there 70+ questions this week? ;)
<Audiocourses> Probably..
<Audiocourses> plus 90+ from ben
<ben_m> :)
<griff505> no way!
<Duncan_4948> You are so good to us!
<Audiocourses> It's in your interest :)
<Audiocourses> Besides it''s the last week for questions.
<griff505> ok
<Audiocourses> Then next week you have mock exams
<Audiocourses> then two weesk for revisions and getting bang up to date
<griff505> sounds good
<griff505> are there any other courses we can do after this one?
<Audiocourses> Yes.
<Audiocourses> There is Digital Audio.
<griff505> City and guilds?
<Audiocourses> Yes
<Audiocourses> It's another module.
<griff505> is it the same format? i.e. weekly questions?
<Duncan_4948> I may be interested - are details on the site?
<Audiocourses> Almost..
<Audiocourses> Griff yes.. and practicals.
<Audiocourses> Also we will have a Work Placement module soon.. where we hook you up with a week or so of professional training.
<Audiocourses> And various other ones...
<griff505> sound good
<Duncan_4948> Yeah it does
<Duncan_4948> Knowledge is power!!!!!
<Audiocourses> Learning in a community is indeed good fun.. and addictive :)
<Duncan_4948> Sunday nights will never be the same when we have finished this course ;)
<griff505> true
<iNSTiNCTDK> so true...
<Audiocourses> Yes, we set up a thread for all ex studnets to stay in touch.. keep networking, it;s important.
<Duncan_4948> Studnets - sounds like a dodgy web site
<Audiocourses> hehe
<Audiocourses> lol
<Audiocourses> Studnuts would be worse!
<Duncan_4948> lol
<Audiocourses> So what's on eveyones minds regarding audio this week?
<Duncan_4948> Not a lot by  the look of it!
<Audiocourses> hehe
<Audiocourses> everyone is sleepy
<griff505> this week - i'm still working on all those quesions
<iNSTiNCTDK> i've been mixing a track for one of my homeboys that we recorded last week...got all the tracks recorded into nuendo and with the instruments and drums and vocals its up to 48 tracks..
<iNSTiNCTDK> confusing
<griff505> i mixed a track for a frinds
<Audiocourses> hehe, you got some interesting track titles?
<Audiocourses> I find I can start off using simple labels like, Kick Drum...
<griff505> yeah
<griff505> 'fuck your life'
<griff505> i just mixed and mastered it
<Audiocourses> and then as the number of tracks build I end up with odd labels like "bangin burtha"
<ben_m> punk band griff?
<Audiocourses> etc
<iNSTiNCTDK> yeah ive labled everything
<iNSTiNCTDK> labelled
<griff505> its sounds a bit like the cramps
<griff505> only no-where near as good
<iNSTiNCTDK> i really got to get my basement sound isolated....too boomy
<Duncan_4948> I found a really nice free thingy called Wheel of Fortune that generate random bass and lead lines - it's great fun - I wrote a chill out tune based around one of the parts it generates
<Audiocourses> sounds fun
<Duncan_4948> Sounds like you need a roominator kit from Auralex Instinct
<griff505> yeah i fancy some of the stuff
<ben_m> you can pick up those auralex kits cheap off USA EBay (new)
<griff505> maybe not as much as a whole kit though
<griff505> whats the shipping cost
<ben_m> dont think its massive as they're quite light
<iNSTiNCTDK> cool...ill check it out..
<griff505> still exensive, maybe some of the cheaper stuff from studio spares will do
<ben_m> ideally get a friend in the states to buy it for you and then get him to post it as a 'gift' to circumvent import charges and tax etc
<Duncan_4948> You're full of useful info Ben :)
<ben_m> hehe
<griff505> yeahi got caught with a pair of headphones
<ben_m> most people say useless
<griff505> well i had to pay the tax
<Duncan_4948> I was being polite!!!!
<ben_m> i bought some parts a month ago and with everything (inc VAT and customs) the whole thing was still 50% cheaper than UK prices
<Duncan_4948> Yeah I was looking at that Tascan control surface you mentioned a few weeks ago - about £400 cheaper in the US
<iNSTiNCTDK> u bought it off the ebay auctions?
<Duncan_4948> sorry Tascam
<griff505> watch the power supply though
<ben_m> instinct - yeah, it was a DI Box w/5 band EQ and an acoustic guitar transducer pickup
<Duncan_4948> Yeah, I was concerned about that griff
<griff505> yeah, if i go to the states, how can i power my mixer?
<ben_m> quite a few pieces of equipment nowadays have switchable 120/240V switches on the back
<griff505> my mixer doesn't, would a power transformer cause any hum or anything?
<Audiocourses> You get those transformers griff if you got no switch
<Audiocourses> Griff just give it some space
<griff505> is that what bands who tour the US do?
<Audiocourses> and away from your audio lines.
<griff505> what do you mean by space?
<griff505> i see
<griff505> and the mixer should be ok?
<Audiocourses> Well put some distance between your desk and the transformer
<Audiocourses> and don't have it near mic cables or worse, line level cables for your processors.
<griff505> ok
<ben_m> Dial 'B' for Buzz
<Audiocourses> You'd want to avoid as much electromagnetic induction as poss
<Audiocourses> which is what Buzz is basically..
<griff505> if i move to the US i think it would be best to sell some equipment and rebuy it there
<ben_m> are you going to move griff?
<Duncan_4948> That's a bit drastic griff just to get some cheap equipment!
<griff505> in a few years, my wife is from texas
<ben_m> hehe
<griff505> and of course the cheap kit ;)
<Duncan_4948> Cool
<Duncan_4948> Glad to see you got your priorities right!
<ben_m> you got a stetson?
<griff505> yes
<ben_m> good work
<griff505> my father-in-law lives in bandera texas the cowboy capitol of the world
<griff505> self-claimed
<ben_m> hehe
<griff505> man, he is a cowboy
<ben_m> does he have a cowboy name?
<griff505> well i recorded him playing last year, with a mic and a MD player and we called it Cosmic D the Mystic Cowboy
<Duncan_4948> I know some cowboys.....they plastered my Kitchen this week!
<griff505> it was like some alan lomax thing going on
<ben_m> hehe
<Audiocourses> lol
<griff505> or was it big d the cosmic cowboy, that was it
<ben_m> works either way
<griff505> do you ever use NI traktor?
<ben_m> yeah, i've used it before
<ben_m> pretty good i think
<ben_m> you can get the hardware control for it now - the record deck
<griff505> is that what would be used for live MP# mixing/
<ben_m> haven't tried that
<griff505> oh yeah final scratch?
<ben_m> griff - yeah
<griff505> does it support VST?
<ben_m> it works with most common audio file formats
<ben_m> griff - not the version I've got (V2 I think)
<ben_m> new one - i dont know
<griff505> 2.5 i think
<griff505> i can't wait to give it a go
<ben_m> yeah, i'd love to get my hands on the wheels of steel (or plastic in this case)
<griff505> me too
<Audiocourses> I love getting my hands on stuff in general, will be a pizza later.
<ben_m> mmmmm
<griff505> yum
<Duncan_4948> pepperoni?
<Audiocourses> That means Peppers here in Italy..
<Audiocourses> So no..
<Duncan_4948> Will remebr that if I ever go there - I don't like pepper!
<Duncan_4948> Man you get around a bit Chris - I thought you were in Madrid
<iNSTiNCTDK> i love pepper...not a big fan of tomatoes though
<Audiocourses> hehe did you?
<ben_m> on the run from interpol?
<ben_m> ;)
<Audiocourses> hehe perhaps
<Duncan_4948> probably that studnuts site he set up :)
<Audiocourses> lol
<ben_m> lol
<Audiocourses> No not lived in Madrid
<Audiocourses> always here
<Audiocourses> Milan.
<Audiocourses> Fairly high-tech infrastructure here..
<Audiocourses> nice.
<ben_m> much celebrations over the football in milan this week chris?
<ben_m> AC fans that is
<Audiocourses> Metro (underground trains) complete with large TV screens displaying all manner of products.. with really good audio systems behind them.
<Audiocourses> Ben San Siro is 5 mins on foot.
<ben_m> ahhhhhhhh
<Duncan_4948> We just got a new tram system in Nottingham but nothing that flash
<ben_m> may have to catch a derby game there? or juve vs AC. nice
<iNSTiNCTDK> dammn chris... 5 mins.. thats dope
<Audiocourses> They go crazy with their car horns in Milan after a game, flags too.
<Audiocourses> I think inter are playing Parma right now.
<ben_m> theres been celebrations on the streets of Torquay and Plymouth this week - not quite the same i'd imagine
<Audiocourses> Sundays is the football day in Italy, as you'd know if you were a footbal fan.
<Audiocourses> Personally I don't care for the mutant game.. but sure Ben, get a plane..
<ben_m> mutant game - pah - such ignorance
<ben_m> ;)
<iNSTiNCTDK> im watchin the Valencio / Sevilla game right now
<Audiocourses> I can admire the girls while you watch the footie
<iNSTiNCTDK> dont know the football chris
<iNSTiNCTDK> knoc
<iNSTiNCTDK> knock
<Audiocourses> Why not? hehe
<ben_m> chris is a rugby man -says it all :)
<iNSTiNCTDK> enough said
<Audiocourses> :))
<Duncan_4948> No comment!! - Still at least England won something at that game
<Audiocourses> There we go ...
<Duncan_4948> Men playing with odd shaped balls eh!
<Audiocourses> I play in the second division here in Milan.
<ben_m> surely that speaks volumes!
<ben_m> lol
<ben_m> <joke>
<Audiocourses> As opposed to the first you mean ben?
<ben_m> haha
<Audiocourses> Too old..
<Audiocourses> You know I got cable TV here
<Audiocourses> and there is (no joke) 14 individual football channels
<ben_m> yeah!
<ben_m> I'm moving
<Audiocourses> and this is no including the sky channels
<Audiocourses> Chelsea were on the other night, they got beat by some team from Monaco or something.
<Audiocourses> Some champions league or something
<ben_m> indeed
<iNSTiNCTDK> they lost to monaco
<ben_m> i had to watch porto vs deprotivo insteadf
<Duncan_4948> Who do you support Ben?
<Audiocourses> My brother in law is staying for a while and he loves it.. he is an ex Hibernia player.
<iNSTiNCTDK> but chelsea's first goal was nice
<ben_m> i support liverpool
<Duncan_4948> I used when I was young - when they were the Man United of the day!
<Duncan_4948> Kenny Dalgleish, Ray Clements and all that
<ben_m> yeah, 70s/80s they were top dog
<ben_m> and then graeme souness had a crack at management :(
<Duncan_4948> Oh dear!
<Duncan_4948> It was the moustash - probably put the players off (Calm down!!!!)
<ben_m> lol
<Audiocourses> OK guys..
<Audiocourses> shall we have 30 mins of Quiz..
<Duncan_4948> OK
* Audiocourses changes topic to 'Pub Quiz'
<Audiocourses> Fingers on the buzzers please.
<Audiocourses> "Name the processors - manufacturers and models - found in Apple Macintosh computers."
<Duncan_4948> G5?
<griff505> MPC74xx
<Audiocourses> anyone else?
<iNSTiNCTDK> no clue
<Audiocourses> The PowerPC G3 and PowerPC G4. IBM and Motorola make PowerPC processors.
<Audiocourses> Is that up to date Ben?
<ben_m> pretty much - i think its primarily Motorola now
<Audiocourses> cool
<ben_m> and of course G5
<Audiocourses> OK next question.
<Audiocourses> List five types of memory.
<Duncan_4948> Compact Flash, hard drive, RAM, CD, memory stick
<Audiocourses> maybe a few of them could have a generic title of "removable storage" ?
<ben_m> more specifically - how many different types of RAM are commonly used
<Audiocourses> Be careful with terms like "types"
<iNSTiNCTDK> buffer, cache, ram, rom, hard disk
<griff505> SDRAM, DDR SDRAM, EDO, FPM
<Duncan_4948> DIMM, SIMM
<ben_m> griff - good work
<Audiocourses> OK next.
<Audiocourses> What advantage does a parallel bus have over a serial bus?
<Audiocourses> anyone?
<Audiocourses> Not the double decker type either.
<Audiocourses> nobody huh...
<Audiocourses> hmmm
<Audiocourses> Ben you wana?
<ben_m> ok
<ben_m> think about this
<Audiocourses> ta
<ben_m> what are the differences between serial and parallel in terms of data movement
<ben_m> anyone
<ben_m> ok
<ben_m> well serial will deliver the data in a 'stream' as such
<Audiocourses> is one "all together" and one "sequencial" ben?
<ben_m> yes
<ben_m> parallel on the other hand will deliver a certain amount of data 'together' as chris intimates
<Duncan_4948> Is parallel all together, hence the name?
<ben_m> yes duncan
<ben_m> so if a lot of time critical information is being sent down a cable
<ben_m> then in most circumstancesa parallel connection can deliver more data at once
<ben_m> so to speak
<Audiocourses> Different connectors then?
<ben_m> usually yes
<ben_m> check out parallel ports and serial ports on your PC
<Audiocourses> so if like 24 tracks of audio are delivered serially..... I guess they must have to move quickly..?
<ben_m> look at difference in size/no. of pins
<iNSTiNCTDK> parallel has 18 pins right?
<ben_m> yes, and serial ports can 'block up' at times
<ben_m> so music (which is time sensitive and critical)
<ben_m> would often be better suited to using parallel connections
<ben_m> as more data can be sent/received AT ONCE
<Audiocourses> Would that be a difference then.. the "clock speed" needed for each..?
<ben_m> transmission rate - yes
<Audiocourses> OK cool thanks ben... lets have another one.
<Audiocourses> Easy one
<ben_m> sometimes this is expressed as a baud rate
* ben_m has left #audiocourses
<Audiocourses> What is a pad?
<griff505> a synth sound used to fill out certain frequencies of a track
-> [griff05] PING
<Audiocourses> ahh good thinking griff.. and yes..
* ben_m has joined #audiocourses
<Audiocourses> that's one "pad"
<Audiocourses> where else can this wrod crop up in sound engineering?
<iNSTiNCTDK> a keyboard key
<Audiocourses> hmmm not really.....
<Audiocourses> think microphone
<griff505> it is used on mics
<Audiocourses> yes griff
<griff505> it cuts out certain frequencies
<Audiocourses> what for?
<Audiocourses> no that's a filter.
<griff505> or volumes
<Audiocourses> but it does cut..
<griff505> it will stop loud signals damaging the mic
<Audiocourses> yes amplitude or level...
<Audiocourses> yes good ;)
<Audiocourses> Where a microphone must have an inbuilt amplifier, some decision must be made as to the level of amplification. Most microphones would not be used near of their upper limits of sound p
<Audiocourses> pressure level for most of the time.
<Audiocourses> The internal amplifiers are therefore optimised for a lower level signal.
<Audiocourses> This would cause the amplifier to become overloaded at high sound pressure levels.
<Audiocourses> To overcome this, it is normal to be able to switch in an attenuator between the capsule and the amplifier. This is known as a pad.
<Audiocourses> Clear?
<iNSTiNCTDK> yeah
<Audiocourses> The same can be found on inputs on mixing consoles.
<ben_m> useful for recording brass
<ben_m> and drums
<Audiocourses> yup
<Audiocourses> More?
<Duncan_4948> Yep
<Audiocourses> What is stereo?
<griff505> a signal split to two channels
<Audiocourses> pretty much
<Audiocourses> The definition of stereo varies between exactly two speakers and at least two speakers.
<Audiocourses> The everyday definition is typically two speakers.
<Audiocourses> The idea of stereophonic sound is to create a sound image between the reproducing speakers.
<ben_m> so two different signals must be sent
<Audiocourses> Fairly hard to summarise that one..
<Audiocourses> ok next..
<Audiocourses> Got some ben?
<ben_m> one thing i'd like to recover from this weeks questions
<ben_m> and one from last week
<ben_m> firstly
<ben_m> 09-What is Groove Quantizing and how does it work?
<ben_m> got some answers to this but could do with some more specifics on the 'how does it work'
<ben_m> how do you setup a groove quantize?
<Duncan_4948> The process of matching timing of one sequence to another?
<ben_m> kind of - but more specific
<iNSTiNCTDK> by using groove templates? like midi files with grooves layed out?
<Duncan_4948> You get a aprt that you like the groove or feel of, then align your parts to the same groove
<ben_m> kind of - but again, how do you get these templates/grooves
<ben_m> ?
<Duncan_4948> Using a quantize grid
<ben_m> and this is derived from?
<Duncan_4948> MIDI files?
<ben_m> ok, this is how you would often do it
<ben_m> you could load in an audio track
<ben_m> with a feel that you like - drum tracks obviously best for this
<ben_m> then you would 'extract' the groove from the audio
<ben_m> this is done in a similiar way to how recycle works
<ben_m> you set a 'sens' level and this looks at transients and creates a marker, or 'hitpoint'
<ben_m> then, the timing of the material is translated into a 'grid' form that can be used to quantize
<ben_m> so essentially the rigid quantize grid becomes more loose
<ben_m> very useful when working with laid-back drum styles
<ben_m> does the extraction principle make sense
<ben_m> ?
<Duncan_4948> Yep
<iNSTiNCTDK> yes it does..
<Audiocourses> nice
<griff505> yes
<ben_m> ok, one from last week
<Audiocourses> next
<Audiocourses> go ben.
<Audiocourses> :)
<ben_m> You have connected a keyboard with 32 note polyphony to a sequencer and you find that it is only capable of 16 note polyphony when played manually. If the keyboard can give the full 32 notes when disconnected from the sequencer what has happened?
<iNSTiNCTDK> i wrote that the sequencer only has 16 note polyphony but that was a pure guess...so i dont know!?
<ben_m> not quite instinct
<Duncan_4948> Just checking what I put..
<ben_m> ok examine the question
<iNSTiNCTDK> thought so
<ben_m> it works when disconnected from sequencer
<ben_m> with 32 note polyphony
<iNSTiNCTDK> 16 notes are used for midi?
<ben_m> not quite
<ben_m> whats the difference between a synth and a MIDI controller keyboard
<ben_m> ?
<iNSTiNCTDK> synth has sounds in it
<Duncan_4948> Controller keyboard does not generate any of its own sounds
<griff505> the synth itself only has 16 note polyphony?
<ben_m> good
<ben_m> so if youre using a synth as an input device, do you want it to generate sounds directly from the keyboard of from the sequencer
<ben_m> or from the sequencer
<Duncan_4948> From the keyboard?
<ben_m> close but no cigar
<Audiocourses> lol
<iNSTiNCTDK> sequencer?
<Duncan_4948>  50/50 chance of getting it right!
<iNSTiNCTDK> :)
<ben_m> you want the sequencer to be the controlling element
<ben_m> so you would play notes, they would be sent to sequencer and then sent back to keyboard
<griff505> i see
<ben_m> so, to do this you need to prevent the keyboard generating tones when you play it - you only want it to respond to information sent to it's MIDI IN port
<ben_m> to do this there is a parameter called 'Local'
<ben_m> this means that you can turn the sounds on or off when using the keyboard
<ben_m> so you would need to set Local to Off in this case
<griff505> but it will still respong to MIDI in??
<ben_m> as with Local On, all notes are being sent twice
<ben_m> yes griff
<Duncan_4948> I've got to dash guys - see you all next week. Will let you know Chris a.s.a.p about the exam venue.
<ben_m> once to sequencer, and once to the synths sound generator
<Audiocourses> OK
<Audiocourses> That was a good one Ben..
<griff505> any audio tasks this week?
<Audiocourses> Would you like one?
<griff505> i'm still working through last weeks qestion
* Duncan_4948 has quit IRC (Quit: http://ircqnet.icq.com/)
* costa has joined #audiocourses
* costa has left #audiocourses
<Audiocourses> Is that a no?
<Audiocourses> hehe
<ben_m> lol @ costa
<Audiocourses> Quick mover
<griff505> yes
<ben_m> what language is that in?
<Audiocourses> it works in Italian
<Audiocourses> anyway, time to split guys.
<Audiocourses> The last week of new topics..
<Audiocourses> So good luck and give it some.
<Audiocourses> Then we can relax a little and start to reflect
<griff505> sounds good
<griff505> see you all next week then guys
<Audiocourses> You'll all find you have so much crammed in your heads :)
<griff505> how do i sort out my directx plug-ins?
<iNSTiNCTDK> aight... see yall next week. im just correcting my answer to the keyboard note polyphony question and editing it in the forum...
<Audiocourses> Griff did you post that in forum a while ago?
<ben_m> griff - i've done some research about this
<ben_m> not possible in Cubase
<griff505> yeah
<ben_m> possbile in Pro Tools apparently
<griff505> oh well
<griff505> not the end of the world
<ben_m> there was talk of someone who had written some code to allow you to do this but it appears to be hearsay
<Audiocourses> Sounds like you need two monitors.
<griff505> what soft samplers do you guys use?
<ben_m> griff - i dont often use soft samplers but i use kontakt when I do
<ben_m> have used halion previously
<Audiocourses> I gotta split dudes..
<griff505> do you prefer to cut and paste?
<ben_m> cheers chris
<ben_m> griff - yeah for a lot of stuff
<Audiocourses> Cheers for now..
<ben_m> I use Battery on pretty much every tune
<ben_m> which is a sampler of sorts
<griff505> what is the advantage of a soft sampler over cut and paste?
<griff505> yeah i love battery
<ben_m> well, you obviously have access to samplers functions like looping as well as filters and the effects section
<ben_m> also you have the ease of use of inputting notes from keyboard
<griff505> yeah
<iNSTiNCTDK> are some software samplers better (sound quality wise) even when they are playin the same wave file?
* ben_m has quit IRC (Ping timeout)
* griff505 has quit IRC (Quit: )
* Disconnected
