<Duncan> Sorry Chris - disappeared there for a sec.

<Duncan_1347> Hi Ben - had a fantastic week in your part of the world - did not see a cloud all week - spent every day on the beach but no waves so no bodyboarding
<Audiocourses> Kernow rocks!
<ben_m> nice one dunc!
<ben_m> sea is a bit flat at present
<Duncan_1347> Yeah - waves were quite good when we were leaving on Friday - typical!!
<ben_m> thats always the way
<Duncan_1347> Managed to get a good sun tan though
<Duncan_1347> And drink lots of beer
<ben_m> :)
<ben_m> whereabouts did you stay?
<Duncan_1347> Just outside of Woolacombe
<ben_m> oh yeah, massive beach up there
<Duncan_1347> North Devon - you are in Cornwall arn't you
<Duncan_1347> Yeah, it's a fantastic beach - really well looked after and really clean sea water
<ben_m> yeah, been up woolacombe and iflracombe way a few times and it is nice
<ben_m> yeah, i'm down south
<Duncan_1347> Spent far too much much on clothes in all the surf shops
<ben_m> good man
<Audiocourses> I spent too much in the pub last night
<Audiocourses> ;(
<Duncan_1347> Can't fault that!!
<ben_m> how can you spen too much?
<ben_m> ;)
<Duncan_1347> Good point Ben
<Audiocourses> drinks are costly in the Navigli of Milan..
<Audiocourses> and they don't close until about 5
<ben_m> nastro azzuro?
<Duncan_1347> Need to pace yourself then :)
<Audiocourses> lots of that flowing.
<Audiocourses> There is a free outside concert in the main square today.. Alica keys, Stereofonics..
<Duncan_1347> Sounds cool
<ben_m> home from home eh?
<Audiocourses> It's a mixed bunch, there are the popular Italian bands there also of course..
<Audiocourses> but you'd probably not recognise the names.
<Audiocourses> Have you heard from John Mizzi yet Duncan
<Audiocourses> ?
<Duncan_1347> Yeah - I've had my candidate number sent and directions etc
<Audiocourses> ahh great stuff...
<Duncan_1347> Managed to find a Travel Inn a couple of miles away and have booked in there
<Duncan_1347> Pretty much drove past it on the way to Woolacombe down the M5 so know where I am going now
<Audiocourses> Good planning ;)
<Duncan_1347> Only about 90 mins from Nottingham so not too bad
<Audiocourses> No, sounds convenient actually.
<Duncan_1347> Looking forward to meeting griff and seeing him in 'real life'!
<Audiocourses> I imagine, should be cool to get together..
<Duncan_1347> I'm after a bit of advice now - been reading a bit about dedicated PCI cards such as TC Powercore to help reduce the load on your CPU when using effect etc - are they any good?
<ben_m> ah yeah, pci dsp cards
<ben_m> ok, good points are;
<ben_m> reduce strain on cpu
<ben_m> can be moved between PCs
<ben_m> good quality plugins
<ben_m> bad points;
<ben_m> expensive
<ben_m> only run plugins that support that form of DSP
<ben_m> so standard VST plugs wont run on them
<ben_m> The powercore is the main contender
<Duncan_1347> There is a new one out I read about - UAD or something like that
<ben_m> yeah, the UAD-1 i think
<Duncan_1347> How would you intigrate one with something like Sonar or Cubase when doing a mix?
<ben_m> are you looking at the top end or mid range ones
<ben_m> ?
<Duncan_1347> Looking at powercore to use with my Sonar 3
<ben_m> ok, the host software automatically integrates when supported plugins are operating
<ben_m> but as i said the DSP can only be used on supported plugins
<ben_m> which means that normal VST plugins will still use CPU power
<Duncan_1347> Sounds straight forward enough
<ben_m> There is a cheap TC option, the powercore element which is only about £400
<Duncan_1347> Yeah I've seen that one
<ben_m> and the UAD-1 is about £30 more
<ben_m> also there is a creamware card but that is about £300 more expensive, and then there are the top end tc cards
<Duncan_1347> I see TC do a fireiwre one now but that is over £1,000 I think
<ben_m> i guess you really need to see which card has the best bundled plugins and which one has the most software avaiable
<Duncan_1347> Yeah - the UAD looks quite attractive as you can add to the basic package with the extra plug ins when you can afford it
<ben_m> obviously the risk is that if you went for one and software developers didn't really support it you could end up with a card with no plugins
<ben_m> same with the powercore element
<ben_m> i'd try to check them out at a digital village or tunkey store and see which one has the best plugins
<Duncan_1347> I'm also still wondering abou a mixer - digital or analogue or a better control sufrace. Would a digital mixer integrate better with the sort of system I have due to MIDI capabilties?
<Duncan_1347> Will do
<ben_m> most digital mixers can operate as a control surface as well
<Duncan_1347> That's what I thought
<Duncan_1347> There is quite an affordable Behringer one around at about £780
<ben_m> lots of dosh though compared to analogue mixer
<ben_m> yeah, the behringer one is ok apparently - haven't tried it myself
<Duncan_1347> Like the idea of the motorized faders - I love gadgets!!!!
<ben_m> the new yamaha is meant to be excellent
<Duncan_1347> Which one?
<ben_m> i think it is the 01X
<Duncan_1347> Yeah - always advertised in Sound on SOund - hate reading that mag, I could spend thousand each month after reading it
<ben_m> about £200 more than behringer but the quality would be superior
<Duncan_1347> Yeah - £999.99 at digital village - just had a quick look
<ben_m> yamahas have good converters preamps and hold their price much better than behringer
<Duncan_1347> Thanks for the advice
<ben_m> no probs
<ben_m> maybe get to a store and check them out and then order on the net
<ben_m> thats what i do often
<Duncan_1347> Yeah I did that with my drums I bought a while back
<ben_m> often cheaper to buy from elsewhere in the EU
<Duncan_1347> No more questions from me for now....except - are you ready for Euro 2004 and who will Chris be supproting? (if anyone at all)
<Audiocourses> Duncan, you got it right.
<Audiocourses> Nobody
<Duncan_1347> Though as much - the ball is too round for you is it :)
<Audiocourses> Everything about it is "too round" for me..
<Audiocourses> ;)
<Duncan_1347> lol
<ben_m> not enough groping for you eh? :)
<Audiocourses> are you homophobic ben?
<ben_m> no, i rugbyphobic though
<Duncan_1347> now now boys don't have a domestric!
<Audiocourses> lol
<Audiocourses> This is light duncan ;)
<ben_m> :)
<Duncan_1347> I gotta dash off in a minute or two - anything specific need to be rasied this week I havn't got any particular concerns at present - still doing the revision
<Audiocourses> Duncan...
<Audiocourses> I'm happy...
<Audiocourses> and of course here everyday if you need me.
<Duncan_1347> Cool - same time next week then?
<Audiocourses> yes
<Duncan_1347> Right - I will go and make a start on the Bank Holiday beer!
<ben_m> go for it my son#
<Audiocourses> lol nice
<Duncan_1347> See you next week, bye
<Audiocourses> se ya
