Mix Opinions Please  Reply with quote

Alright chaps,

I decided there havent been many mixes posted up for a while and i was messing about in the studio tonight so thought id do a bounce of the first mix pass for you all to have a listen to.

Please Note: i did not record this track, however i did edit (comp & pocket) and mix it.

Its unmastered atm, more on that to come.

Download Here

Its a 256kbps AAC file, to get it you need to type in the code in the top right corner of that page and hit download.

All opinions are gratefully appreciated, brutal honesty please, its only a rough mix but id like some thoughts so get your critical listening hats on.

If you are interested i mixed it in Pro Tools HD 7.3.1 using a DM2000 for remote control.

Look forward to the replies
-Paul

P.s. Its a nice song so worth a listen even if you have no intention of posting

Mix Listen  Reply with quote

Hi Paul,

Wow! I listened to the tune about 13 times and I am impressed. A good song and all the parts sit in the mix beautifully. Regardless of who tracked the pieces, it all is present. I especially like the way the vocal (lead and backing) sits in the mix. I monitor on NS-10M's and they are bass deficient, but the bass was just right on regular speakers.

For me, the drums could be a little more present, but maybe that's for the mastering stage. They were never lost, just a bit in the background at some points. It's all subjective though. You did say be brutal and honest. Mixing (in my pea-brain) is the most difficult and fun part of this thing we do. But, you got every part to sit nicely. I know what comp means, but not pocket. I will look that up now.

Listening to the tune made me want to get into Pro Tools and start working in earnest on editing. I am impressed with your work and know why you wouldn't be shy about posting it for all to hear. Great job! I wish I could spend a month just watching you work. That would be a priceless learning experience. Thanks for making 'Home' and your work available for us to listen to.

Cheers

Ron

Pocketing  Reply with quote

Thanks Ron,

the drums are quite badly recorded and its taking some serious effort to get a decent sound out of them, the kick drum and snare specifically so will work a bit more on that.

And to quickly explain 'Pocketing' is to go through each track and align each beat to the tempo. The way i do this is to import a loop at the correct tempo and align everything to that loop, its very time consuming as its literally; find the transient, chop it, slide it into place, crop it down and crossfade. it takes a very long time but gives great results. to put in perspective on this track when i had finished i went to transfer to a USB hard drive from my laptop and the computer crashed as the session contained 10,000 fade files. ill have a look at doing a before and after if i can find the original session.

Pocketing and musicianship  Reply with quote

Hi Paul,

Not sure where to put this one.
Thanks for the info on 'pocketing'. I can't imagine all that work. Does the engineer usually do all that editing, or is it the mixing person's job? I read an article recently where Geoff Emerick commented that musicianship has become lax because it's 'easy' to fix in Pro Tools (or any DAW). Doesn't sound easy. What do you think on that?
Is that a normal procedure having to align everything ? My hat's off to you, because the song certainly sounded like it was played quite well, and by competent musicians. That kind of editing should be recognized as much as the performers. There is a link to the article below. I think the BBC broadcast a documentary on Emerick's comments. You certainly are talented and determined to put that much work into one song. I'm still trying to comprehend that much editing.

cheers

ron

Critical listening  Reply with quote

Hey Paul,

Is this a new mix? Let me know and I'll give another listen. Been ill, so haven't spent much time perusing the forums. Happy to comply, although my ears aren't up to the 'critical' level yet. Embarassed Be glad to work on that.

Cheers

no still the same one, bit busy atm so gonna do a remix probably next week or week after that. got a few ideas. bit of creative panning and the vocals still need work.

but by all means have another listen and give a second second opinion Wink

EDIT: Just a thought, at about 2:00 theres a brush track which is quite prominent and cant decide whether to leave it in or get rid of it as originally i had it muted while putting the mix together. have a listen
