| Cool Edit 2.0, blue snowball USB mic, need recording volume |
|
|
I have Cool Edit Pro and a blue snowball USB mic, on Windows XP. I can't
figure out why it doesn't record at a greater volume. The waveform is
very thin. I'm recording unamplified acoustic classical guitar. I
can amplify it afterwards, but then there is a lot of that airy noise.
I turned up the volume fullblast on the mic. I was told to turn it up in the mixer window, which I did, but it's still no where near enough for a natural sound. If I get one inch away from the mic, then I have enough volume, but that is not possible. This mic is supposed to pick up well.
I took an audio engineering course on ProTools a few years ago but I
can't remember about recording 6dB or 12dB...I thought it was best to
remain at OdB. I just don't remember for sure. I tried 6 and 12. 6
made a little difference. Maybe this guitar needs a pickup? But how do I plug a pick-up into my computer? Should I get a soundcard with 1/4 inch jack input? Is there such a thing?
A friend recorded an entire album of me using a blue snowball USB mic.
I can't get anything like the natural volume he got with just the mic
and a laptop. The mic sat on the coffee table in front of me. I
didn't have to crowd it at all. It was 2 or 3 feet away and it picked
up fine, both vocals and acoustic unamplified guitar. We listened to
it back immediately and the volume was fine. I don't know what software he was using though.
I think it's just a setting in Cool Edit Pro of which I am unaware.
I wish I was a geek like you. Can you help me, all the things
affecting recording volume?

Hey,
just had a read of the manual quickly, i would recommend you have the switch on the back in the 3rd position, this looks to have the nicest tone for acoustic guitar. avoid the middle/2nd position as this activates a -10db pad.
also check in the windows control panel under sound and make sure the input volume is turned up.
as the mic is USB the analogue to digital conversion (ADC) has to be taking place inside the mic itself, so if you get a reasonable level to start with by ensuring the mic is fairly close to the guitar and that pesky pad is off, you should be able to use the gain function in cool edit to boost the level without too much extra noise.
give that a go for now
