dbx 231 eq (i dont recomend this eq its noisey)
dbx 266xl compressor /gate
presonus single channel tube pre amp
into an maudio fast track pro
and m audio bx5a monitors
great sounding isolation booth
i have 700 bucks to spend on bettering my set up. should i use it to slide over to a more computor based set up? ie. pro tools? if so do i need a new sound card and would it make my fast track obsolete? i was thinkin maybe pro tools and a baby blue because i used one before with nice results. i love to record all types of music. but the main things i record are punk rock and folk. any good suggestions? aside from save 700 more and get a 414  |

Hi djl,
which instruments are you recording most often? First thing i would say is to steer clear of the BLUE baby bottle, its probably the last microphone i would choose for folk music due to being a very
hard microphone
For $700 you wont get a soundcard all that much better than your current m-audio one so i would look at improving your setup further up the chain. if you are a musician perhaps even a new guitar for example. if you often record using the D.I. inputs of your soundcard for bass, guitar and keyboards etc. a good quality D.I. box could make a surprising amount of difference to the quality of the sound.
Give us some feedback on those thoughts to get started.

awsome thanks! i have nice git fiddles a les paul, taylor acustic, gibson sg 335 dot hollow body, bc rich and a music man bass. and there is no main insturment i record. i suppose the drums are most common recorded by my self. i like the d.i. idea ,any good suggestions on ones i should stay clear of? i mostly record rock that stays pretty close to punk roots. but i do want a well rounded set up though. thanks for your help! |

Ive always been a fan of Radial in that price range. There is the J48 which is the lower end model but still good sounding, or the higher end JDV which is a class A discrete box with external power etc.
Just steer clear of the cheaper models such as Behringer, Tapco, Samson and so on. |
