| I sing loud, what kind of mic? |
|
|
I have adobe audition and have been recording guitar tracks through an old pc mic for a while. The guitar sounds ok, but I can tell i need a real microphone to record any vocals. I sing very loud Generally. Sometimes I can get pretty quite and soft, but usually it gets loud. This is what i mean:

Listen to "Its not over" and you can see how he sings from soft to almost a singing yell. Except, I literally get my voice to the loudness of a yell, and do it more often than he does.
I hopefully want a mic around $100 or so, does anyone have any suggestions? I dont know between a condenser and dynamic since I need soft and very loud vocals without being distorted and clipped. Any help or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks |

A good idea is to learn Microphone technique. This means when you sing louder you move away from the microphone and when you sing quieter you move closer to the mic. A good singer will do this well. Watch any video of some good singers and you will see what I mean.
If you are intending to do lots of gigs, and are on a short budget, you could just buy a standard dynamic mic, such as a SM58. It can be used for gigs and you could use it for recording. But it probably will not give you the same detail that a condenser would. But of course you may not want lots of detail. To be quite hounest its too difficult to just say use this mic, because simply each persons voice has a different sound and different mics work well with some singers and horrible with others. |

| Mic Max SPL |

I wouldnt worry too much, any modern reputable microphone dynamic or capacitor is capable of handling SPL's in excess of what the human voice can generate.
I havent tried an awful lot of microphones in that price band but generally MXL by marshall are recommended and you can probably pick up an Audio Technica large diaphragm mic too for that money. Also try second hand/ebay.
best option is to try a friends mic and see how it sounds. |
