| Pultec Style EQ |
|
|
Hey there chaps,
I have looked on Google etc to try and determine exactly what is meant by the term "Pultec Style EQ". I understand graphic, parametric eq, and all of their intricate little parts. I cannot, though, find what a Pultec style EQ is. Is it something to do with the "Q" setting? From what I can get from the information is that if one boosts, the Q is wider and cutting makes the Q narrow. Is this correct? Just wondering and knowing that AC Forums has someone to clarify this for me. Thanks in advance!
Cheers

Hi Ron.
It's just a brand of EQ.
"During the 1950s and 1960s the sound of pop recordings was further defined by the introduction of proprietary sound processing devices such as equalizers and compressors, which were manufactured by specialist electronics companies. One of the best known of these was the famous Pultec equalizer, which was used by almost all the major commercial studios of the time."

If you were really absorbed by this, you could build one, here is a schematic.

Hey Chris,
Thanks for that information. I have seriously been thinking about making a stab at building something like this, or at least a preamp. The Pultec type EQ seems to be referred to by everyone. I thought that an EQ is just an equalizer. Thanks again for the reply, and I hope summer is going well. California is burning and we are seeing 110 plus for the next four days with seriously unhealthy air. I want to escape the U.K.
Cheers

Finally, I've found the big deal about Pultec EQ's.
The unique feature is that there is a boost and attenuation control for the band selected. Didn't make any sense at first, but one can get interesting tonal characteristics by boosting and cutting the same frequency.
Very subtle, but very cool. Also, very expensive. |

There are quite a few software emulations out there, if interested.
I've found the Bomb Factory and UAD ones to be pretty cool. |
