| NATIVE INSTRUMENTS KONTROL AUDIO INTERFACE MONO STEREO PROB? |
|
|
Hi guys, im an mc form the uk, ive been recording music on my pc through cool edit pro and audacity most of my career, ive just used an sm58 mic put into a creative soundcard. when ive recorded ive always recorded in stereo, a mono sound just dosnt sound very good to me. When i purchsed a native instruments kontrol 1 audio interface, and a 200 pound audio teknika condenser microphone i thought all my quality issues where going to be answered, as the sm58 was good but i wanted a nice studio sound.
Ive installed the software and plugged the mic in to 3 DIFFERENT computers now, a brand new £500 sony laptop, and 2 pc's, for some reason it will only record in MONO. no matter what i do i cant record in stereo, and this mono sound is great quality, but sounds so crap compared to being recorded in stereo. Ive been googling alot about the differences between mono and stereo, and cant work our for the life of me why a little sm58 plugs straight into my pc with one lead and records stereo, and yet a beefy audio interface with a studio quality mic, only will record in MONO. i used audacity to record, and have sat for 5 hours changing settings, etc, and i cant even get the mic to work in mono on cool edit pro. has anyone here ever had a similar problem, and does anyone know a solution of how the hell i can record in stereo with my new mic and interface. any replies or suggestions would be very appreciated. |

| Microphones are Mono |

Basically mmtuk, you have always been recording in mono. The stereo recording was basically just the mono output of the microphone recorded twice.
Microphones by design are mono devices unless you specifically buy a stereo microphone which is essentially just 2 microphones in one box.
Theres nothing wrong with your setup, The reason you may have thought the SM58 in stereo sounded better is because it will have been summed across 2 channels making it louder. |
