Greetings and salutations,
I've recently volunteered for a charity profect; a high school reunion which will take place at a school stadium. The stadium is a standart sized (app 100x70m) football/soccer (not american football) stadium and it doesn't have much structure around it; so it is basically open air. The problem is, a reasonable outdoor PA system is needed for the event. I have little experience with small indoor PA systems but this thing is way over my head so I need serious help for setting up a proper sound system. The school will sponsor the event and the PA system (including mixers, amplifiers etc.) will be rented anyway, so budget is not really a problem. Any help will be appreciated, any detailed answer will be more than appreciated.
Cheers. |

Well you've certainly thrown yourself in at the deep end!
A venue that size will need some pretty serious PA, you will probably need to speak to a PA company about this as you'll need quite a serious crew. For a venue that size i would want a medium size flown array with a stereo delay stack. Its not the sort of thing you can do with a couple of self-powered JBL speakers!
Sorry i can't really help much more as you would need a series of lectures to get to a level where you could design a system of that size.
If you go by the general rule of 5w per person when outside, 100x70m could theoretically hold say, 4000 people. You'd be looking at something in the region of a 25-30kw PA system as a rough estimate for amplified music.
Is it just spoken word or music? what type of music? etc. If its just spoken word you could just you a line driving amp and a chain of horned speakers like you see at an outdoor fair or something. |

Well thanks for the reply and yeah I know, I got myself in real trouble. I know this is way over my head and I better speak with a professional company. However, as the school is our sponsor they would like to at least have an idea of what will be needed and approximately how much will it cost. The venue is really big but fortunately we expect 1000 people at most, so this should save us some trouble regarding the 5w per person rule. There will be music, pop music generally, and hopefully no boring speeches, so we do not need microphones. The main source of sound will be a laptop and as far as I know we will need a desk mixer, couple of power amps and PAs. I will be grateful if you can name any other thing needed and suggest some brand names.

Two more things, what's a stereo delay stack and where can I get more information on setting up a proper outdoor PA system. |
