Stereo to mono conversion  Reply with quote

I will be recording audio and I have two omni-directional mono microphones with 1/4 in outputs and I want to plug both of these in to a 1/8 in stereo connector. Can someone alert me to either adapters or a cheap preamp type device which could do this conversion for me?

Make your own adaptor  Reply with quote

you could try somewhere like thomann.de or turnkey.co.uk but your best bet is to buy the connectors and make one yourself.

although for anywhere approaching decent quality you should be on the lookout for a recorder that doesnt use minijack inputs!

other than the consumer orientation of minijack equipment (I'm using a sony video camera which only accepts 1/8 in), is there any technical disadvantage to using 1/4 in connectors over 3 pin XLR? I'm not terribly eager to try off camera because of numerous TERRIBLE issues with those recording systems (like bought external audio card with phantom power with USB connector and during the show the Apple laptop started doing updates...). I cannot yet justify the cost for the purchase of a more expensive stand alone audio device. It's hard to make up $300 in $10 DVDs.

which microphones are you using?

bare in mine they will need to be dynamic as you cant supply them with 48v from the camera

Radio shack omnidirectional mics from a few years back. In the day I had a nice set of M-Audio condenser mics. I've seen stereo splitters for use on airplane headsets. Where might I find one of these that isn't made out of cheap plastic? Maybe a Y connector of some sort, 2 mono female L+R 1/4 jacks which plugs into a stereo 1/8 jack?

youd be so much better off making up your own.

but if you have to buy, you can buy 1/4" splitters, then get a 1/4" to minijack adaptor. that may work.

however the pins wont be wired correctly so you wont get stereo, that defeats the point so ill say it again, make your own!.
