Recording an Acoustic Piano  Reply with quote

I have been recording from my upright acoustic piano, and would like to learn as much about recording as possible. I have got to the stage where I have made an mp3 sound file described by one person as very good for an upright piano, however another opinion is that the sound although good, is as though the listener is in a very large room listening to it.

Is there any way I can get someone to listen to this sound file on this forum so I can get more comments on it? Can I provide a link for people to download it?

I have been told that upright acoustic pianos are difficult to mic and feel that I have struck a bit of luck now in my efforts, and if I can further improve the sound I will try. I will give details of everything I am using in my next message. When I found this site I thought it will be helpful and I may be able to increase my knowledge on audio technique.

Post a link to the file : we'll be glad to listen to it and help you out. Also tell us how you've recorded the piano : the equipment used, placement of the mics, the room that you recorded in, etc.

Cheers

megaupload.com is a good place to host your files for us to hear.

Hello conquistadore,

Sorry I took so long to reply. I used two B1 (Behringer) single large-diaphragm condenser cardioid microphones, TASCAM US-122L audio/midi interface, and Cubase LE software. The room is 14 ft by 16 ft with 9 ft high ceiling, house is brick veneer and floor is carpeted.

With piece number one I had the mics horizontal and parallel with the floor and wondered whether I should be doing this. The are both behind the piano about 30 cm from the sound board two thirds of the way up the piano.

With pieces numbers two and three I had the mics vertical and a little higher and closer to one another and I dragged the piano further out from the wall (now about 2 ft away whereas before it was about 1 ft away from the wall). The mics are still about 30 cm from the sound board.

I don't notice that the Niagara Theme sounds any different with the change of the mics positioning and the piano further out from the wall..

Will try anything if you think I can improve the sound. Thanks.
