I am doing a project, where I will be bringing a laptop/computer to the stage to bring in electronic elements with a band. Here is my problem. I need to run a click track to the drummer and run a master out to send to FoH. Currently I own two sound modules. The old Mbox 1 and a Project Mix I/O. Now the project mix would do it, but its waay to big and bulky to be used in a live setting. The MBox would be great, but I don't think what I want is possible with the Mbox. There is only 2 outs (L + R).

Can anyone recommend me a device or setup for this? I did look at this http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/FastTrackUltra-main.html - but it does seem a little expensive. Bare in mind, I do not intend to record with this, its purely for routing out. So I would need a device with 4 outs at least. Having more is a bonus but not necessary.

The programs I will be using, will be Reason 3 and Abelton Live.

Hey there Drumscool4me,

I want to get my 2 p in on this one.

I totally agree with Varun and Paul. You won't get much for the $300 at GC or anywhere else. Instead of blowing the cash so eagerly, take some time and check out a bit about recording. Everyone likes to sell mics for every drum top, drum bottom, inside the kick, outside the kick, room mics, overhead mics etc.

Paul is correct when he says sometimes two mics are enough. When you hear a drummer on a kit you hear the istrument as ONE instrument...a drum set, drum kit etc. One, two or three mics have (still do) get awesome kit recordings. If you already have a computer, you're half-way there. Plenty of free software and inexpensive interfaces out there if you look. Guitar Center won't tell you about those. If you know a bit about what the process is before you walk out of your house with your money, it will be better spent. I'm not sure about the figure of 8 or omni mics as Varun states they will give you much more than the kit in the less than perfect room. Plus, a couple of LDC microphonec with multiple patterns (regardless how cheap) will exceed your budget.

Keep asking/checking these forums and distill all the information you receive, and you won't go wrong. I can do 8 mics on drums, but only ever do 3. But I had to learn the technique by a little research and I didn't learn it from a music catalogue.

See what your computer's capabilities are and go from there. Stand alone HD recorders will exceed your budget and won't give you adequate inputs for everything you want to record at once without spending much
substantially more (just for the recorder) not including the drum mic ket.

You made a good start by looking on the forums here. These guys are the best and my go to place for realistic advice.

As you already have a tube pre id go for something more clinical, and you cant get more clinical than the Millenia HVC-3. I use it regularly and its pretty spectacular in just how clean and transparent it is.
Hi Joe

Could you tell us what the other softwares are? Maybe this Mic might need some gain at the input stage in Cubase (the Input channel on the mixer). Digital gain might not be the best option, but given the setup this is the only option you have.

And, as Paul has suggested, do install the ASIO for All driver as it makes a tremendous difference to Cubase when using an onboard sound interface. If you aren't too sure about how to enable the ASIO for All driver in Cubase post back and we'll help you out.

Cheers
Thank you very much for your response Paul. I am using an Acer Aspire 5040 laptop and my sound card driver is Realtek. I am learning how to record my own music on this computer. I did what you said and I tried to lower the buffer when I was using Sonar 5 and it lessens the problem but the sound didn't come out good. I had the chance of recording the bass part of my friends own music a few years ago and the studio was using a computer too. The sound there was perfect. Could you help me again and teach me what I should do to make it work? Can you recommend something that I should maybe add to my computer? Again, I thank you so much and best regards.

                                      OK.

I've seen enough, this is classic undercurrent spam, two close in IP address indicating that it is probably the same person entering false conversation.

So we mark it as spam.

Well done.
