Jules Freeman - username julesf

Country: England

I found Chris very helpful and supportive right from my first enquiry, I felt that I needed to gain qualifications but also learn about the side of audio that I just had not got involved in. Audiocourses.com delivered on both counts. This was a steep learning curve which was great, and I found that when Jules Freemantaking my exams I easily had all of the knowledge required to answer the questions on the papers. Having passed the exams I now felt that I was ready for new challenges out on the field putting my skills into practice. more about Jules

Some of Jules' Work

Leaves are falling - This track was produced between me, Hakan Hannu of Sweden and Carolyn Lugo of LA. Hakan wrote and produced the back track, then emailed it to me and I added more synths and effects. Carolyn and I wrote the lyrics and Carolyn flew over from LA to lay down the vocal in my UK studio! I mixed the track and heavily used the autotune to produce that dance style vocal. The track was presented at the Miami winter dance conference, it was narrowed down by one company for some 120 selected possible for release to the final 4 possibles and Carolyn was phoned to be told that it was only rejected for release because they felt that the lyric was not commercial enough. This track also shows what can be achieved collaborating over the Internet.

24Hrs - This track is written by Dean AKA Dollar Bill. I have worked with Dean a great deal. My job here is to record and do the final production to his tracks, 24Hrs is a great concept for a track, and I think that Shani’s Vocal is real cool on the chorus.

Shine on - Shine on is by Myriad and they were the first band that I recorded and mixed in my Spanish studio at the Music Factory in Mijas Spain. Shine on shows the excellent writing skills of the Myriad team and the excellent vocal capability of Paul Howells their lead singer. I produced some of the tracks and was responsible for the guitar solo idea on this track.

Casualty - Again form Myriad (we recorded and mixed 12 tracks in the 4 Day session) this is an excellent Ballard with great atmosphere featuring Paul’s fantastic dynamic vocal.

Tarmo Pajusaar - username mommi

Country: Estonia

Born and raised in Tallinn, Estonia. I graduated from the Estonian Academy of Music as a clarinetist, and later with an MA in musicology. I Played clarinet for a living in various orchestras around Estoni. I presently work full-time in IT field as a Document Management consultant and participate in occasional projects as a freelance clarinetist or, lately, as a recording engineer. I Chose AudioCourses because I needed a major shift from “may probably be an audio engineer” closer to actually working in the field. Besides invaluable knowledge the course has given, it is hard to overestimate the impact of positive feedback affirming you really can do it. It builds necessary confidence for making some potentially important decisions in life. The experience of online communication has been great, and it was illuminative to meet people with so diverse background and goals. While we have been in less contact after the course got over – life just goes on –, I feel in a sense we’re still together.

A couple of Tarmo's Live Projects

instr - The "instr" was recorded and mixed live at the court of the historical castle of Haapsalu, Estonia. The instruments consisted of drums (theseTarmo Pajusaar were electronic, cymbals and hats were real and, bass, electric guitar with effects processor, accordion. Four percussionists were contributing to the rhythmic part. Drums were taken through DI-boxes from the processor (separate outputs for floor, snare and toms), plus a pair of overheads. Bass and guitar also through DI-boxes (guitar in stereo). Each percussion got their own mic (Sennheiser 421, I guess), so did the accordion (two KM184s probably). The desk was a Yamaha 02R. I recorded in parallel to two Yamaha AW16G DAWs (each has eight inputs) synced together through MIDI, and also made a live mixdown to DAT. The mp3 represents the DAT version.

Razzle Dazzle - is from "Chicago", and was recorded at the Estonian Radio, pressured by time, a few days before the premiere. The piece was performed once, plus only a couple of retakes. All performed together, no overdubbing. A pair of microphones for the orchestra, plus one for drums (not used too much, just for clarity and panorama, since the rhythm section was sitting at the right side -- you can hear it). One mic for the guitar and yet another for the piano (it was not too much in tune, and as such, fitted well with the style). Bass directly. Singers behind the conductor a few meters and a bit to the side, partly separated by a wall. One mic for the soloist and a stereo pair (XY) for the choir. As you guess it, leakage was the main problem. This induced a lot of work during the mixing stage, to get the unnecessary microphones (those not used during certain passages) shut up well but not noticeably. Recorded once again to the AW16G, only one this time. To fit onto eight tracks, the drum mic signal was mixed to the main pair. Mixing was done at home at VERY night time. Some tracks of the CD were recorded at other places by other guys, for CD mastering I owe very much to my friend who spent the whole night with me as we tried to even up these very different sounding productions. (Just for background: we finished with a rehearsal at 11:30 pm, started mastering at 1:00 am and got it done somewhere at 8:30 am. After that my friend went directly to the rehearsal place to set some new things up, I was lucky enough to get a 45 minutes sleep before following him, so that we could start with a new rehearsal at 11:00! Can you imagine how we did look like...) more about mommi

Alan Wright - username Albow

Country: Spain

Alan WrightAlan's career has taken various turns. After A levels he joined the Inland Revenue, leaving to start a degree in Philosophy at 23. After graduating he trained up to teach English, advancing into teacher-training and course design. Deciding to change tack, he made a fresh start in IT, starting as Bench Engineer, moving to Systems Support. With 4 years of engineering experience, he took the Sound engineering course. Longing to use his skills in a field that he had a real interest, the course was ideal; it was suited to an engineer's mindset and music had always been Alan's no. 1 passion . He graduated from the course with a distinction in the technical exam and a merit in recording practices. He is still in IT (now under the misleadingly grandiose title of Technical Escalation and Knowledge Engineer :) ) and is looking to break into Sound Engineering proper through the work placement scheme.

“I think we are moving into a time when online learning will become THE form of distance or non-full time learning. This course is leading the way. I felt that I wanted for nothing and that the online format gave the complete learning experience. I felt that I was a rookie on the course and benefitted from the input of the two pace setters Jules and Mommi. A life-saving proportion of help was to be gained however from former students' input, whose contributions often were excellent and vividly expressed.”
